Frank Newman Turner, NDA, NDD, FNIMH, (11 September
1913-28 June 1964) was a British pioneering organic farmer, writer and
broadcaster, who, based on his experience of natural treatment of animals,
later became a consulting medical herbalist and naturopath. His books Fertility
Farming, Fertility Pastures, and Herdsmanship are regarded as classics of
practical organic husbandry.
In Against the Grain, and drawing extensively on my
father’s archive of writings, diaries, and publications, I have endeavoured to describe
how he overcame the challenges of standing against a social torrent that was,
and to some extent, still is rushing in the opposite direction. Now, eighty
years later, the message of environmental conservation, sustainable food
production, and peaceful resolution of conflict is even more critical. What can
we learn from the efforts of Frank Newman Turner and his contemporaries?
